2016 has seen a huge rise in the sales of 4x4s and it’s not hard to see why. The transformation over the past decade has been rather substantial, moving from the rough, rugged and robust to the stylish and sleek but still with the classic stopping power you would expect from a 4×4. With such high quality models on offer from multiple manufacturers and competition at an all-time high, we’re here to guide you through picking the perfect 4×4 with our top five 4x4s of 2016.
If you’re looking for a powerful, off-road 4×4 that handles rough terrain well, whilst still being aesthetically pleasing, then the Suzuki Vitara is the one for you. In the past, Suzuki has usually put off-road design ahead of style but it has now come up with a modern cross-over that manages to sustain the necessary fire power of the past combined with current trends. This is a mid-sized model and is also a good option for city driving with the family, whilst maintaining the ability to tackle dirt roads and off-road terrain.
The Jeep Renegade is great for off-roading driving. As a 4×4, it can easily eat up most surfaces and conditions thrown at it, however it has not been widely praised for its on-road capabilities or comfort levels. If you frequently find yourself roaming dirt roads and rough terrain, then the Renegade is a very strong choice with the Trailhawk model being rated as the best in its class for off-roading ability.
With a lot of attention being put on the crossover 4×4 used for inner city driving, some people overlook a good old fashioned pick-up truck. If you’re in the market for something that has both beauty and brawn then the Navara is your ideal choice. This model packs a punch and can carry just over 1000kg, with a towing capacity of up to 2700kg, and boasts a low ratio transfer box that gives that extra push needed on rougher terrain. The stylish, car-like interior and attractive exterior makes for a solid choice in this year’s top 4x4s.
The VW Tiguan has been a huge seller due to its the interior comfort, ease of use and decent off-road ability. This 4×4 is aimed more at city drivers looking for comfort as the option to tackle mountains and rough terrain does not come as standard. However, most people usually purchase it as an extra due to VW’s impressive reputation. This is a family focused 4×4 car but easily rivals our next choice, the Land Rover Discovery.
Land Rover Discovery Sport
Stylish, spacious and sturdy, the Land Rover Discovery Sport covers all basis. With 7 seats for the whole family, a classy interior design and the ability to handle off-road terrain with ease, this 4×4 ticks all the boxes. The 2.0-litre diesel engine makes for a smooth ride whilst giving enough force to tackle tough terrain. The only real setback of the Discovery is the effect it has on your bank balance; luxury comes at a cost with a starting price of £31,040.
