It’s 6am. You’re half asleep, bleary-eyed and the blood curdling ‘BRINNNNNG’ of your alarm clock says it’s time to move.
For some of us, the next challenge is getting our foggy heads off the pillow. For others, the real hurdle is tackling the commute ahead.
Over a lifetime, the average commuter will spend one year of their lives travelling to the office, with an average journey time of 54 minutes. Now, we know that driving to work can feel like a daily punishment, but hey, at least this proves that you’re not alone…
And look on the bright side, this is time you can put to good use! Sometimes all it takes is an open mind and a bit of in-car entertainment to turn your bog-standard commute into the perfect start or end to your day…
If you’re the kind of person who will happily talk to a lamp shade if there’s no one else around, then the idea of a long trip alone probably doesn’t float your boat.
So how about enlisting a travel companion? Perhaps you have a colleague nearby who’s happy to split the journey. Company for you and a little extra cash in the back pocket – boom!
Plus, if it works out anything like it did for these guys – just think of the banter you’ll have…
Call a loved one
Remember that time your mother rang and you said you were busy? Or that occasion your mate called to catch up and you forgot to call them back?
Well there’s plenty of time to kill in the car, so where’s your excuse now? Presuming you have access to hands-free, see this as an opportunity to catch up on the life admin you’ve been neglecting.
The great thing about music is that there’s a tune for every mood…
Have you woken up on the wrong side of the bed? Boss giving you a hard time? No problemo… cue Alanis Morissette. Or perhaps it’s been a good day at the office. Maybe you got to finish on time today… cue some very happy Pharrell Williams.
You get the idea. Music has the power to lift your spirits in those moments when you need it most. Consider it your first round of therapy at the end of a trying day at work.

Change your route
Ever thought that maybe you hate the roads you use more than the commute itself?
Let’s face it, if you’ve just been torn away from your cosy bed, sitting in stand still on the M1 won’t exactly help to restore your faith in humanity.
So change the scenery. Take the A road alternative! Catch the sun rising over a fields instead of catching the rush hour traffic.
If you’re anything like us, you will agree that food is life. Better than life, in fact. So the way we see it any bad situation is hugely improved with food, right?
So why not introduce some snackage to your glove box? Go crazy! We’re talking crisps, cookies, sweets – whatever tickles your taste buds.
If the daily commute really grinds your gears, then it just makes sense to throw some comfort food into the mix!
If you want a proactive way of using a commute to your advantage, how about using up a little brain power…
Just think, if you use the alone time to explore ideas you’re usually too preoccupied to delve into, who’s to say what you could achieve?
You could be a poet and you didn’t even know it. Or even this generation’s Thomas Edison about to invent something that tops the lightbulb. Who knows, maybe you’ll be the clever clogs who cracks the Zodiac code.
Failing that, you could always just plan your ‘to do’ list for the day. Every little helps, right?
Don’t let your mind wander too far though – you’re driving, remember!
If you think about it, how often do you really get to enjoy time to yourself?
We live in a world that’s full of people, noise, distractions and more people. But when it’s just you and the open road, this is your time.
So turn off your phone, radio and the stresses of the day. Take a moment to reflect, clarify and make sense of the world.
By the time you get home, you’ll have reached a zen-like state that not even Buddha could manage.
