Thanks to the new systems, if you sell your car before its road tax period runs out, you are entitled to a refund for any full month’s of tax remaining.
How to get your road tax refunded
In the case of a private sale, it is the responsibility of both parties to declare that the ownership has changed, but when selling your car to We Want Any Car, the system is slightly different. When you sell us your vehicle, we will fill in the yellow section of its V5C, and ask you to send it to the DVLA, which will tell them that the vehicle has been sold to someone in the motor trade.
Once they’ve received and processed the V5C, you will receive two letters from the DVLA. One is to thank you for informing them of the vehicle’s sale, and the other will be a refund of any road tax that you are due i.e. the tax for the remaining full months. The refund will be sent to the address of the owner on their records, so it’s important that you keep them up to date with regards to your address. If you have less than a month of tax remaining, you aren’t entitled to a refund.
Seling an untaxed car to We Want Any Car
It is also possible to sell a car to We Want Any Car without road tax, but as it cannot be driven on the road, you will need to arrange for the vehicle to be collected and delivered to our branch. Otherwise, you can tax the car for 6 months, drive the vehicle to our branch, then claim your refund, but you will only receive a 5-month refund since the first month will have already begun.
