What documents do I need to sell my car?

To prepare you for the appointment our customer service team will go through what to expect and what documents you will need on the day. But if there is anything you are still unsure about, just ask!

In the meantime, here is a comprehensive list of what you will need.

Your vehicle documents

  • V5C registration document (this must have been in your name for at least 3 months – find out more here)
  • MOT certificate (if applicable – learn more here)
  • If you have any outstanding finance on your vehicle, you will need a letter/email from the finance company confirming their settlement figure and validity (for more information on settling outstanding finance click here)
  • Service history book/documents and vehicle handbook (as well as any extras such as spare keys, locking wheel nuts, radio & key codes, sat-nav discs)
  • Please note that in order to comply with the relevant legal obligations that apply to high-value transactions you may also be required to show proof of purchase and the source of funds used.

Your personal documents

If your valuation is under £10,000 and we are coming to visit you at the vehicles registered address, we'll need to see one piece of photo ID and one document to prove your address. In this instance your drivers licence can be used for both forms of ID.

If your valuation is over £10,000 and we are coming to visit you at the vehicles registered address, we'll need to see either one piece of photo ID and two documents to prove your address OR two pieces of photo ID and one document to prove your address.

What if I'm not the registered keeper?

In most instances you will need to have been the registered keeper/owner of the vehicle for at least 3 months before selling it to us. However, this is subject to personal circumstances and should be discussed with a member of customer service team.

If you are selling the vehicle of a deceased person there is further documentation which must be provided. For more information click here.
