What documents do I need to sell my car?

To prepare you for the appointment our customer service team will go through what to expect and what documents you will need on the day. But if there is anything you are still unsure about, just ask!

In the meantime, here is a comprehensive list of what you will need.

Your vehicle documents

  • V5C registration document (this must have been in your name for at least 3 months – find out more here)
  • MOT certificate (if applicable – learn more here)
  • If you have any outstanding finance on your vehicle, you will need a letter/email from the finance company confirming their settlement figure and validity (for more information on settling outstanding finance click here)
  • Service history book/documents and vehicle handbook (as well as any extras such as spare keys, locking wheel nuts, radio & key codes, sat-nav discs)

Your personal documents

In order to carry out the sale of your vehicle we will need to see three forms of identification. At least one form of identification should be a photo and one must be proof of address. We cannot accept one type of ID for both forms. For example, if you provide your driving licence as proof of your photo identification, you must provide another form of identification for your address, such as a utility bill.

  • Original birth certificate (UK birth certificate issued within 12 months of the date of birth in full form including those issues by UK authorities overseas such as Embassies High Commissions and HM Forces)

  • Benefit book or original notification letter from Benefits Agency
  • Firearms or shotgun certificate
  • Residence permit issued by the Home Office to EEA nationals on sight of own country passport
  • National identity card bearing a photograph of the applicant

Acceptable forms of proof of address

Please note that the address stated must be your current address and must match the address on your V5C document.

  • Utility bill (gas, electric, water) issued within the last three months
  • Local council tax bill for the current council tax year
  • Current UK driving licence (but only if not used as evidence of name)
  • Bank, Building Society or Credit Union statement or passbook dated within the last three months

  • Benefit book or original notification letter from Benefits Agency (but only if not used as evidence of name)
  • HMRC self-assessment letters or tax demand dated within the current financial year

Unacceptable forms of identification

What if I'm not the registered keeper?

In most instances you will need to have been the registered keeper/owner of the vehicle for at least 3 months before selling it to us. However, this is subject to personal circumstances and should be discussed with a member of customer service team.

If you are selling the vehicle of a deceased person there is further documentation which must be provided. For more information click here.
